Zeibekiko is a Greek dance that captures the essence of this country. It is a unique and emotional dance with no specific steps or movements; instead, dancers let themselves be carried away by how they feel the music.

This dance dates back to the Zeybeks, a group of guerrilla fighters from Asia Minor during the 17th century (under the Ottoman Empire). Originally, Zeibekiko was a warrior dance performed by two armed men who faced each other to demonstrate their bravery in combat and skill. Over time, it evolved into a solo dance while maintaining its masculine character. Men danced to a slow rhythm, expressing respect and dignity.

In 1922, after the expulsion of Greeks from Anatolia, many refugees brought this dance to mainland Greece as a way to express loss, pain, and regret. During this period, the dance became strongly associated with Rebetiko, a musical genre tied to society’s outcasts and often linked to rebellion. Its consolidation into Greek popular culture occurred in the mid-20th century, connecting with Laiko music, a more mainstream or urban folk style. Today, Zeibekiko has also been embraced by women, remaining an expression of deep emotions regardless of gender. As Dimitris Karamanlis, owner of Dance Academy Alehandro, a dance center in Thessaloniki, explains: "When a woman feels pain in her heart, she dances alone in a small circle, letting herself be carried away by the music with free steps and movements".

Although the dance is strongly associated with pain and solitude, it can also convey positive and joyful emotions. It is a solo dance, yet it also serves as a way to connect with others through shared music and emotions. As Karamanlis states, "The fact that it does not follow predetermined steps makes it a genuine and free dance", transmitting authenticity and serving as a channel for personal expression.

Zeibekiko is fundamental to Greeks, as it preserves a tradition that connects them to their historical and cultural roots despite social changes and historical hardships. This is why, as Dimitris Karamanlis says, "being able to teach this dance to people of all ages is very fulfilling for me". Moreover, as he explains, the dance has adapted to modern times—not in its execution, but in how it connects with contemporary Greek music.
