In Greece, basketball is one of the most followed sports, to the point that it has evolved into a national symbol, with a loyal fan base and a strong presence in daily life. But why has basketball resonated so deeply with the Greek people?
In large part, this is thanks to the turning point in 1987, when Greece hosted the EuroBasket Championship. The national team won the victory, which led to a nationwide fervor. This triumph was not only a sporting achievement, but also a powerful national pride that it’s still alive to this day. As Coach Kostas Dimitriou of the Black Sheep team recalls: “The '87 EuroBasket changed everything. It wasn't just about winning a trophy; it was about proving to ourselves that we could achieve greatness. That victory instilled a belief in ourselves as a nation”. This team's success created a generation of passionate fans and aspiring players, and little by little, the sport became a popular hobby.

Marios Terzopoulous, player for the Black Sheep team, affirms that for him “Basketball is more than a game; it’s a passion. We grew up idolizing these players and we’re very proud of our national teams”. According to Dimitriou, another main reason Greek basketball is so famous is its distinct personality: “Greek basketball stands out for its improvisation, inventiveness, and a strong emotional commitment”. Although for many fans being a professional player is a dream, “competing at the highest levels is not that easy because there are limited opportunities”, as Terzopoulous affirms.
In Greece, basketball is more than just a game; it’s a cultural root that has evolved into one of the main favorite sports and a source of inspiration for many young generations.
