On the west coast of Denmark, an age-old tradition continues to thrive in a factory that has been perfecting the craft of horn transformation since 1935. This business specializes in producing exquisite items from cattle horn, using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations.
The use of horn as a material dates back more than 200 year in Denmark. Historically, rural communities would repurpose cattle horn into functional tools such as spoons and combs, offering farmers an additional source of income. Today, Hornvarefabrikken remains one of the last factories in Denmark preserving this craft.

“We have practically everything made from horn. It can be used for anything, like jewellery, spoons, shoehorns, combs. We do most things”, explains Anine Brunn, manager of Hornvarefabrikken store in Aarhus. Every piece is handcrafted, undergoing a meticulous process of cutting, polishing, and shaping in hot oil before achieving its final elegant form.
Horn products often spark divided opinions. Some admire the natural beauty and sustainability of the material, while others remain sceptical about its use. However, advocates of its traditional craft emphasize its ethical aspects—horn is a byproduct of the meat industry, and repurposing it into long-lasting items prevents waste. “Either people think the concept of using horn is great, or they find it a bit… not to good. But it’s an old tradition here in Denmark”, says Anine Brunn.
While the methods remain deeply rooted in history, the factory continuously evolves its product line to meet contemporary tastes. Beyond classic items like combs and spoons, they also craft elegant jewellery and decorative pieces. Each item, with its unique grain and texture, tells a story of craftsmanship and heritage. Despite changing times, horn-working remains a specialized craft requiring skill and precision. The artisans who practice it today preserve a centuries-old technique, adapting it to modern demands while maintaining its traditional essence.
